Re: Нужно ли было писать "русского" Конана?
Объяснения Робертса вот они:

Mr Roberts, I was wondering how much background reseach you did on your Conan books, and if you went to any trouble to try to place them in a particular chronological context in the Howard stories. We have all been bashing Turtledove on here lately because of his carelessly overlooking certain essential continuity issues from the Howard stories. I was wondering if you put much stock in that kind of thing, or if you just took off and wrote a wild adventure without much continuity with the other Conan materials. Also, which of your Conan books to you think is the best one? Thanks!

When I undertook the task, I made it clear that I would work straight from the original Howard stories, not using the earlier pastiches for reference. DeCamp said that was fine. So I set my stories where there were gaps in the Howard tales. They may have stepped on the chronology of other pastiche writers, but that was the agreement.
I had the most fun with CONAN THE BOLD, in which I shamelessly ripped off Dashiell Hammett. I steal only from the best. Others have noted the similarities to THE MALTESE FALCON and RED HARVEST, but I also got in elements of THE DAIN CURSE and THE GLASS KEY. The only one I couldn't work in was THE THIN MAN.
Incidentally, some of the Tor rules called for toning down the Conan character. Some I agreed with, but most I didn't. They saw the main readership as teenage boys, and didn't want anything that would bring protests from parents or junior high librarians. They didn't want me depicting Conan drunk, or even eating too much, lest I encourage gluttony among the young, I suppose. Entrail-spilling was to be minimized. No graphic sex, which at least was in keeping with the 30s era when Howard wrote. Also, no hint of Howard's racism, which I had no problem with.
Overall, the biggest problem was writing in full-length novel form. Howard created the character and world for pulp-magazine short stories, and they are perfect for that. I envisioned short novels of about 50,000 word length. Tor wanted 75,000 word minimun, which is why you see a lot of digressions and irrelevant side-stories. They kept sending back the manuscripts for more padding out.
In short, I think they were successful books on their own terms, but there were things I would have done differently had it been up to me.

Hey, John, about Conan the Bold. How do you figure his Hyborian road trip sooner than Howard had him leaving Cimmeria?

Howard forgot. Sometimes I forget things, too.

Лично я от такого подхода не в восторге. Лучше бы было немного изменить произведение, а не плодить своих версий. Все бы были довольны и читателям не пришлось бы недоумевать.
